Sickle cell trait, another common clotting disorder, is determined by a blood test.
Women who are found to have a clotting tendency, based either on having prior blood clots or identifying a mutation, may be advised to avoid estrogen-containing oral contraceptive medications. There may be safer alternative medications for her to take. A hematologist who specializes in clotting disorders may be a valuable resource to provide this guidance.
